On Memorial Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

-John McCrae, 1915

I remember every memorial day weekend growing up my mom would always have a crepe paper poppy attached to the strap of her purse, and I remember that whenever I was with her, she would give me a dollar to donate so i could have one too. I loved those little paper flowers, though I hardly understood their significance way back then. Memorial Day is for remembering, for honoring, and for thanking those who have given their lives, or are risking their lives to make sure that we have the rights and liberties that we have here in America. My grandfather was a veteran, and I remember visiting his and my grandmother's graves every Memorial Day and looking at the flags pushed into the earth of their graves. My sister played TAPS on her trumpet at the cemetery, so it was mostly my mom and I, since it was her parents. I suppose that I'm blessed in the fact that not many of my loved ones (friends or family) are in any branches of the military, I have a couple of friends serving in various branches, and for that, I thank them, but I never have to worry about a family member not coming home, like so many others in this country. Regardless of that fact, I extend my thanks and eternal gratitude to those serving this magnificent, though sometimes flawed, country of ours. In honor of our armed forces, I did the logos for the Marines, the AIr Force, the Navy, and the Army, as well as the American flag accented with what else, a poppy. :) I apologize that the logos aren't perfect, but I did what I could with the space I had. ;)

I used:

Thumb: American flag & poppy

American Apparel Cotton as a base with CND Anchor Blue for the blue, and China Glaze Salsa for the red of the stripes as well as the poppy. for the black I used American Apparel Hassid, and for the green, I used CND Green Scene .

Index: Marines

American Apparel Passport Blue as a base, with China Glaze 2030 from Khrome Collection for the gold, and China Glaze Salsa for the red, over Sally Hansen All the White Stuff, so the red popped.

Middle: Air Force

China Glaze Millennium as a base, with CND Anchor Blue for the logo.

Ring: Navy

Sally Hansen All the White Stuff as a base, with American Apparel Passport Blue, China Glaze 2030 from Khrome Collection for the gold, Sally Hansen All the White Stuff for the shield, with CND Anchor Blue for the blue on the shield, and China Glaze Salsa for the stripes on the shield.

Pinky: Army

American Apparel Hassid as a base, with Sally Hansen All the White Stuff for the star, and outlined in American Apparel Manila.

Topped everything off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Io domani vado a comprare l'occorrente!!!!

Did You Miss Me? Maybe?

Hi everyone! I am so sorry that I was gone for so long (almost a month!) but my life is finally settling down a bit and I can get back to my favorite hobby. So this post is going to be an update on my life and my nails, but the real nail posts will begin tomorrow.

So after I got through the craziness of my finals, I had to pack all of my things and wait patiently for housing to tell me to move. That week I started my new summer job as a secretary, and then that Wednesday I was told to move at 5pm. In the rain. Fantastic. So I get my key from the guy and I asked him to double check to see if it was the right room because it looked wrong. He gave me a snotty tone and said it was right. I spent all night hand-moving all of my things to the new room bcause I have no car, it took about 6 hours. After everything was moved, I found out that I had been placed in a male suite. Fantastic. So I spent the next day moving again to the room that I was supposed to be in. It was a complete nightmare. Then I started my summer classes and that has been keeping me busy too.

Moving my nail polish was quite the trek, below are the pictures of them after the move and then there are corresponding pictures of them re-organized. Nothing got broken thank goodness (I would have cried) but it looked like a hot mess. The nail polish melmer is now stored under my bed because it being on top of my flimsy bookcase was not a good place to put it. I like it there, and I have more room to spread out when I polish my nails and toes.

All of that moving also took a huge toll on my nails, they pretty much all chipped or snapped off, which is a big reason why I haven't been posting. They still aren't great, but at least they are even and a reasonable length now. I feel like I can take pictures of them at least lol. They are still rounded, but I hope to square them back off soon. I have literally been so busy that my no-buy lasted much longer than I thought, in fact I just bought nail polish for the first time since the end of February. How did I survive for so long? Needless to say I picked up a few of the pretty China Glaze Poolside polishes, I got Pool Party, Kiwi Cool-ada, and Flip Flop Fantasy. I am trying really hard not to go overboard, so three for now will be just fine. ;)

So all in all, I am ridiculously excited to be back in the community again, I missed you all so much!!! I feel so out of the loop and I am sorry that I have missed so much of what has been going on. The plans for the near future are to have a giveaway soon, to post some backlogged swatches, and to swatch some of the polishes of my roommates in my apartments, they all love nail polish too. They think I have too many polishes..... because I do, but they have a lot of colors that I don't have that I would love to swatch for all of you! Yay! Thank you guys for sticking with me while I have been away, I hope that you continue to enjoy my ramblings and the blog! :)

Lime Line

Today is another simple one, my apologies- it's been a super busy weekend- I made about 10 dozen cookies along with a bunch of other stuff!! :-P I used another of the new ULTA polishes that I got, In the Limelight, a lime green foil finished polish. Anyway, sorry for the short write-up, it's been a long day and I think its about bedtime.

I used ULTA In the Limelight as a base, with American Apparel Hassid for the lines. Topped it all off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Swatch: KIKO No. 298

(above camera flash - below natural light)

This color is very pretty. It's actually very sheer but it's perfect for layering.
Below you can see it above some black, blue and white.

KIKO 298 above a black creme, a blue shimmer and a white creme.

Trovo questi in stick favolosi come colore, come durata e applicazione, ve li avevo già decatanti nell'articolo in cui li avevo swatchati tutti:Kiko stickEyeshadow : swatch and review

Vi spiego come agiscono!

Come funziona Instant Volume Lip.

ULTA-mate!

Today's manicure is simple, because I was busy busy today! :( I did get an AWESOME new Ulta Professional polish though, so I had to use it- unfortunately it was the only one left in the cardboard display (it's part of a special collection), and there is no label on it, so I don't know what the name of the color is, but I plan on investigating tomorrow... so not to worry, I'll update it in the info. It's gorgeous- a vivid pink with a LIME GREEN reflect?! Sign me up. Awesomeness. LOVE. Anyway. They also had in the same display a lime green FOIL polish- which had a label (In the Limelight), which is gorgeoustastical, I can't wait to use it too...I LOVE foils.

I used ULTA Professional awesome color with no label as a base, with China Glaze Cherish applied with Bundle Monster plate BM03 just to the upper corner of each nail. :) Topped it off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Are Expensive Nail Polishes Worth it ?

Im sure most people interested in nails have
heard of the nail polish brand - OPI.
OPI is one of the most expensive
nail polish and nail product brands out there but are
they really that much better ?
My answer is Yes !
OPI dries fast, goes on smooth and they
have a great variety of colors.
While China Glaze or other brands may
have more neon, bright or youthful colors OPI surely
has enough colors to choose from.

My China Glaze polishes have been annoying the
heck out of me lately. I only just started using CG
a couple months ago. These days I have been
in more of a rush to finish my nails instead of just
sitting watching tv while lounging around with
my wet nails. I have now noticed how they
take forever to set and I keep touching things
accidently & ruining the polish on a certain finger
even after waiting for 10 mins !
When using OPI this rarely happens.
I just apply my 2 thin coats and then Seche Vite.

Even when applying Seche Vite over China Glaze
I dont feel like my Seche works to its full capability.
Its just something about the China Glaze formula...
Why does it stay tacky so long ?!
Ugh.

Besides China Glaze and OPI I also enjoy Color Club,
Etude House & a couple other cheap Korean
nail polish brands. Another 'cheap' nail polish brand
that I cant stand is Revlon. Those take forever to dry as well.
Ive heard some bad stuff about Sally Hansen's polishes
too but I havent tried them.
Love her top coats though.

I do love China Glaze's color selection because they
are so bright and fun but they just
take too long to dry.
I adore Recycle, For Audrey, IV - colors that
I just cant find dups for in OPI.
By the way - have you noticed how OPI's
light - medium pink selection is so lacking ?
Other brands are really way ahead of
OPI when it comes to the pinks.
China Glaze truly has amazing unique colors
so its a shame their formula is so crappy !
If you have lots of China Glaze polishes and are
having this same problem, just buy Seche Vite
or Essie Good to go or some other type of
fast drying top coat.

If you cant find any - use a blow dryer on the
cool setting or just dunk your hands into a
basin of cold water.

Basically, OPI is great - totally worth the price.
You will get tons of applications out of that $8 , $10 or
whatever you pay in your area for OPI.
On the other hand - I do have lots
of other polishes that were under $5 &
come out just as well after using a proper base & top coat.
China Glaze comes out great in the end - that is if you
can avoid effing up your manicure.

Ultimately OPI + Seche Vite = Power Couple.

Experiment and see what works for you !

Mini KIKO Haul

Another mini haul, from KIKO this time. Since KIKO polishes are now €1.90 instead of €3.90 I'm taking advantage of this and buying all the colors that I wanted before, even if I have to say that at this point I bought almost everything that catched my eyes.
I have 32 KIKO polishes at the moment on a total of 105 shades available but a lot of color are extremely close to each others and there isn't a large variety of finishes (basically just cremes, shimmers and glitters).
Tomorrow afternoon I'm going to swatch these and the ones from yesterday if it's sunny. I also have some swatches of other KIKO polishes in my hard disk but I still have to edit the pics so you will see them in the next few days. I'm trying to swatch all of my KIKO polishes but they are a lot...

The following pics are from my lovely sister. She just recently started to love nail polish and stopped biting her nails.
This afternoon she put on ORLY Pixy Stix and proudly went shopping.
Then she asked me to konad her thumbs with CG Awaken and plate m3.

NOTD: Banana Candy

At first I wanted to do a tutorial for this nail art but it's so easy that I don't think is needed.
I used LAYLA 101 for the base and added some dots using KIKO 290, 295 and 296.
I took inspiration from the "lemon nails" in the latest issue of Nail Up.

Tutorial #034: Gradient Pink French

Super easy and lovely!!

What you need: some red hearts for decoration.

Colors:

  • Base Coat: KIKO White strong&shiny No.05
  • Milky White: KIKO No.205
  • Pink: Unknown polish (no number, name or brand)
  • Top Coat: KIKO No.03
How to:
  1. Apply your base coat.
  2. Apply a milky white polish, better with some gold shimmer.
  3. Apply a light pink polish (better with gold shimmer) on the tip of your nails. Apply a second coat if needed. If you want you can add some docorations like red hearts.

NOTD: Pink & Orange French {three versions}

Another recent NotD.
I wore this for my mother's birthday last week.
I never tought that orange and pink could match this well but when I tried this I really liked it.
I liked it so much that I made two versions of this mani and also a pedi.
I took inspiration from this nail art I saw in a mag (don't remember which, sorry!).

In the first two pic is the "basic" version. I used KIKO no.280 and Miss Sporty no.140 for the french and topped everything with KIKO no.228, a silver glitter.

Here is the "bling" version with some stars and hexagonal silver glitter.

Here the whole look. For the pedi I just alternated pink and orange.

What do you think? Want to see more matching mani and pedi?
